Ceramic fiber paper can be used on a kiln shelf as a substitute for kiln wash. The paper can be used on any kiln shelf material. There is a binder material in the fiber paper that can fog the back surface of any glass, however, this fogging can be easily avoided by using a simple process to prep to fiber paper for kiln use.

Prep your fiber paper by burning out the binder, firing the paper to 1,250F or until the white color returns. The fumes from the burnout process need to be vented from both the kiln and your studio. The paper becomes quite fragile after it has been fired so handle with care. Both sides of the fiber paper may be used as long as the paper is thick enough to protect the shelf.

At higher temperatures, fiber paper may add a unique texture the back side of the glass. Some consider this texturing to be a sought after effect that adds interest. If paper fiber sticks to the glass, remove it by lightly rubbing the back of the glass while holding it under running water. The water keeps you from having to breathe the fiber particles.
